ASHLAND -- Cynthia Faith Johnston, 53, of Greenwich, Ohio, died Friday morning, Dec. 7, 2007, at Hospice House in Ashland following a short illness.

She was born on May 12, 1954 in Willard, Ohio, a daughter of the late George Standley and Edna (Van Buren) Johnston. She was a graduate of South Central High School in 1972. She graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1976 and received her Master's Degree in Elementary Education from Marygrove College in 2003.

Cindy retired from Mapleton Local Schools on May 30, 2006, after teaching fourth grade for 30 years; 10 years at Nankin Elementary and 18 years at Polk Elementary schools and her last two years at the Mapleton campus. Cindy’s favorite activities that she enjoyed doing with her students was making puppets and performing plays for the parents, carving pumpkins, frying the seeds, making chocolate waffles and making up special songs to teach educational concepts in the classroom.

Cindy was listed in "Who’s Who Among American Teachers" in 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2006. She was also awarded the Jennings Scholarship Award in 1992 and 1993.

She is survived by her sister, Shirley (Dick) Crist of Ashland; two brothers, George (Carol) Johnston of Shelby and Royce (Janet) Johnston of Greenwich and 36 great-nieces and -nephews. In addition to her parents, a sister, Rochell died in 1946 and two brothers, Samuel died in 1949 and Carl died in 1950.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday Dec. 10, 2007, at 10 a.m. from the Ashland Christian Church with the Rev. Scot Myers officiating. Burial will be at Edwards Grove Cemetery west of Greenwich. Friends may call on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Denbow-Primm-Kemery Funeral Home in Ashland.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Ashland Christian Church Building Fund, 1480 Orange Road, Ashland, Ohio 44805, or to Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Drive, Ashland, Ohio 44805.
