Norwalk Reflector

GREENWICH -- Gary Robert Harris passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning at the age of 54.

Born in Greenwich, Ohio, Gary graduated second in his 1972 class at South Central High School.

At the age of 19, he became the president of the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce and was involved with the Rotary Club and other community organizations. He was assistant branch manager of the Willard United Bank in Greenwich before serving as assistant vice president of the Home Savings & Loan Co. in Norwalk.

In 1984, he left his banking career to pursue his desire to become a truck driver. At the time of his death, Gary had been driving trucks for 25 years, 24 of which were for R&L Transfer in Norwalk.

He was an active member of the Church of the King congregation. Gary donated over 45 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross over his lifetime.

Gary was a loving husband, a kind and patient father, and had only recently experienced the joys of being a grandfather. He was eagerly anticipating the arrival of another grandchild in August.

Gary handled his role as the head of a household of four girls with grace, selflessness and a wonderful sense of humor. He not only led his life devoted to his wife and girls, but also led a life devoted to Jesus Christ. Although he enjoyed driving semi trucks, he held a lifelong passion for trains, especially steam engines. This love for trains was something he shared very early on with his grandchild, Eliza. Gary was also an avid Buckeye fan.

Gary is preceded in death by his mother Lois (Gulvin) Harris Cherry, his father Edwin Charles Harris and his brother Don Harris. He is survived by Marcia, his wife of 34 years, his daughter April and son-in-law Scott Still, his daughter Tricia and son-in-law Joe Porostosky, his daughter Kelly and son-in-law Winston Nuckolls, his daughter Jill, his granddaughter Eliza, his sister Jane and brother-in-law George Woods, and his brother Jon and sister-in-law Barbara Harris.
